You want a nice new bicycle gizmo for your birthday. Your husband wraps up a new vacuum. Human beings are terrible at reading minds. Cycling isn't the place to hope others know what you are thinking. Don't make the pickup truck behind you guess your next move. These handy (no pun intended...well maybe a little...) signals are required by law. Use them.

I cringe when I see it. It's Little Red Riding Hood. The 18 and 32 milers want to ride side by side so they can talk to each other. The 50 milers need to get around them. Soon, a line of century riders is also in the mess and we're riding over the yellow line. Cars are honking and we're hoping a police officer doesn't decide to drive by. According to a very unscientific poll I conducted with my non-cycling friends riding more than 2 abreast is the most annoying law broken.
As we are approaching Little Red Riding Hood, as well as the other cycling events of the summer, I thought it may be a good idea to review some of Utah's cycling laws. When an angry motorist yells, honks, blows smoke, or lets you know they are not thrilled with your choice of exercise you will feel confident that you are doing what is legal.

When I first started researching the topic of eating to be a cyclist years ago, I came across an interesting passage in Joe Friel's book "The Cyclist's Training Bible." While teaching about the importance of eating fruits and veggies, he mentions that spinach is one of the best foods an athlete can eat. Why? Because nitrogen, which you need to build muscle, is depleted faster than it is replenished, especially as we age. The loss of nitrogen is one reason our bodies become acidic. The result is a loss of calcium (among other nutrients). In women, this means osteoporosis. I feel my chest start to tense up a mile before I hit the house. I've been riding past this house for nearly 7 years. Recently, however, new owners moved in and brought with them my nemesis. Built like a giant sausage on four little roly poly legs, this dog has the speed of a greyhound and the herding skills of a blue healer. I've dubbed him the weenie-blue-sausage-dach-hound. I'm not afraid to admit that he scares me.
Maybe you’ve been poking around on this site because you’ve been thinking about buying a bike and getting in shape. Good for you! You’ll find that cycling is great exercise, can be very social, and can build confidence. The bike is a great equalizer and I believe strongly there should be many in every garage. When I get up in the morning, there is usually little doubt as to what shoes I will wear. I'm an 'on the go' kinda gal. Being on my feet all day requires a shoe that is comfortable. I know that if I wear heels I will be in intense pain by 10:00 a.m. There are times when I may go for the classy 'heels with my jeans' look, but I pick those times for outings that require sitting. Knowing what gear you'll need for a ride is similar.
Occasionally, riders show up to a group road ride using a bike not suitable for that ride. Being new to cycling can be somewhat overwhelming. There are a lot of decisions to make. Bringing the correct bike to a ride will help you enjoy the outing. So, for all of you new riders out there, here is a bike breakdown. If looking stylish on the bike is your thing, you'll want to come in to the shop and order one of these!
